‘Do I look good for my age?’ This question is now the most asked question replacing the once familiar question, ‘how old do you think I look?’ Why this sudden shift in our perception of aging?

Dr. Eddie Fincher of Moy-Fincher-Chipps weighed in on the subject.

“The tight, gaunt look once considered youthful is just not accepted anymore. Instead, plump and full is now the desired youthful look,” said Fincher.

“Moderation is a word that is more commonly used today than it was in the previous decade,” said Fincher. “The overly pulled looked has been replaced by a gentler, softer surgeon’s hand. The result is a more natural, refreshed look,” added Fincher.

MFC partner Lisa Chipps commented on a recent statement printed in The London Sunday Times stating, ‘the backlash against the plastic pursuit of youth has begun.’ “I don’t see this as a backlash against cosmetic surgery at all,” said Chipps. “It’s just that new rules are being established,” added Chipps.

Sharon Stone gladly revealed her age when promoting her recent film, as didDesperate Housewives star, Teri Hatcher.

Fashion is another youth driven arena, but even in this provocative world of very young models things appear to be changing. Karl Lagerfeld, always the first to grasp a change, stated that he preferred the Nicole Kidman generation over the Lindsay Lohan generation.

“Don’t confuse the issues of youth and beauty. There is a new attitude out there,” said Chipps.

Fat Injection vs. Synthetic Filler

But which injectable is right for you? Fat injection or synthetic filler?

Fat injection involves extracting small amounts of fat from your body and transferring it to your face. Once fat is extracted, it can also be frozen and stored for later use. The fat for this procedure is usually grafted from the abdomen or flanks, processed in a centrifuge, then injected into the face for desired effect. The whole process takes 30 to 90 minutes, using only local anesthesia and sedation, which means the patient can return home shortly after the procedure.

By using your own body fat, there is no risk of rejection. One procedure can last from a few months, to a few years. However, fat is not as predictable as synthetic filler, which may lead to a bumpy appearance once the fat sets. Fat injections usually generate better results in regions of the face where there is less motion such as the mid and upper regions of the face.

SPF & Beyond

According to the American Cancer Society, in 2009, there was an estimated 68,720 new cases of melanoma – the type of skin cancer that accounts for the most deaths. While skin cancer is highly preventable, clinicians and patients must keep abreast of changes in the ways which sunscreens are evaluated, along with new preventative measures.

1. Sunscreens protect against damage to the skin, however SPF is a poor indicator of how well a sunscreen protects against UVA-induced DNA damage. Protective clothing should always be worn to avoid UV radiation.

2. Dietary factors can sometimes influence the incidence of skin cancer. This being that certain antioxidants have revealed a decrease in sunburn cells, proliferating epidermal cells, and dermal mast cell infiltration. Sunburn cells are evidence of damaged DNA, proliferating epidermal cells are predisposing factors for skin cancer, and dermal mast cell infiltration occurs as a result of photo-aging.

3. Enzymatic therapy has been on the rise. DNA repair enzyme creams introduce DNA repair enzymes onto the skin through topical application. DNA repair cream is able to increase the amount of epidermal melanin.

Sunscreen is currently the only agent with a well-established role in skin cancer prevention. DNA repair creams may be of benefit in the future, however, annual skin examinations, avoiding solar radiation during peak sunlight hours, and patient counseling on the proper use of sunscreens remain the essential weapons in the fight against skin cancer.

Age Spots and Pollution

We all want to look as young as possible. I am in my fifties. My skin does not look like it did when I was married 25 years ago because of all the tennis and driving in Los Angeles I have done. What can we do to get new skin in addition to wearing sunscreens during the daytime? I have improved my skin and many patients and friends by using the best creams and using a few skin resurfacing procedures.

Use the best night time creams. Tretinoin is the generic name for prescription brand names like Retin A, Renova, Avage, Tazorac and Tretin-X. Use tretinoin cream at least 2 nights per week. Use DNA repair enzyme creams the other 5 nights per week. The tretinoin cream performs like a mild peel to rejuvenate the skin. It does cause mild dryness and scaling. It can be used at nighttime even if you are outside in the sun during the daytime. The DNA repair enzyme creams(DNA-EGF Renewal skin care line; find it @ www.dnaegfrenewal.com ) repair sun damage by actually fixing damaged DNA in the skin. These creams can prevent skin cancer and treat and reduce pre-skin cancers.

Consider resurfacing the skin with procedures to reduce red spots and brown spots. How to decide which cosmetic procedure is best for you.

Cosmetic procedures can be classified into four basic groups:
Resurfacing procedures( fractional laser resurfacing, photofacials, chemical peels or even skin creams)

Tightening procedures(facelift, browlift, Thermage, necklift or Pelleve)

Filling procedures( Restylane, juvaderm, Radiesse, fat injections or Sculptra)

Relaxing procedures(Botox or Dysport)

Here are some common cosmetic skin conditions and my most common recommendations I would give to my patients:
Do you have a lot of sun spots and blood vessels? (Photofacials and tretinoin with DNA-EGF creams).
Do you have a lot of wrinkles around the eyes and mouth? (Fractional carbon dioxide laser resurfacing).
Do you have a saggy neck and jowls? ( Facelift or P elleve)
Do you have bags under your eyes from a hollowing? (Fillers around the eyes).
Do you have hollow cheeks and temples? (Fat or Sculptra injections).
Do you have just loose skin of the neck? (neck lift or Pelleve).
Can you afford zero downtime? (Fractional non invasive resurfacing or IPL with fillers and Dysport).
If you can afford more than one week of downtime? (Laser resurfacing, with lifting procedures and fillers).

These generic cosmetic procedure recommendations require a consultation by an honest experienced cosmetic surgeon who has the access to all of the new technology procedures and can perform or discuss the surgical procedures. The physician should give the advice that is in the best interests of the patient.
Sometimes the cosmetic consultation may even result in the advice that no procedure should be done.
